Description
Up for sale is a brand new 1/200 Boeing Company Boeing 727-100 UDF Test Bed N32720 (XX20413) by JC Wings.
Built in 1968 for Faucett, this 727 was obtained by General Electric in 1985 for use as a testbed for it’s unducted fan technology engine. It was retired in 1989 and broken up in 1991.
The proposed unducted fan was a hybrid between a turbofan and a turboprop engine, which was aimed at 1000 nautical mile (1900 km) flights at a speed of Mach 0.75. GE claimed greater fuel efficiency (mainly because the bypass ratio increased from 6:1 of engines at the time to 30:1). Ultimately, airlines decided that the fusion of a turboprop and turbofan engine was too complicated and ironically a drop in oil prices in the late 1980’s meant that they didn’t care as much about fuel efficiency.
This model air-plane is made from die-cast metal and includes extensive detailing. It is similar in quality to Inflight200, Gemini Jets, Phoenix Models, NG Models and Aviation200.
Includes display stand.
