Description

Up for sale is a brand new 1:72 scale USAF Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird 61-7978 “Rapid Rabbit” (001641) by Century Wings.

Shortly after her arrival, ground crews painted the rudders of 7978 with the Playboy Bunny logo, which remained there for most of its career, earning it the nickname “Rapid Rabbit”. On Thursday, July 20, 1972, she was damaged beyond repair while attempting to land at Kadena AFB during extreme crosswinds. Upon landing, the braking parachute failed to slow the aircraft, forcing the pilot Denny Bush to turn the landing attempt into a touch-and-go and try for a second attempt. He released the chute, took off, and attempted another landing. On the second attempt, Bush could not slow the aircraft down in time as the chute had already been released and she ran off the end of the runway, breaking the main landing gear and damaging more than just the paint on her underside. He and his RSO Jimmy Fagg escaped serious injury, but #978 was a total loss.

This model air-plane is made from die-cast metal and include extensive detailing. It is similar in quality to Corgi, JC Wings, Oxford and Century Wings.

Includes display stand.
